Stephen Waldron awarded prestigious RIBA Fellowship

Stephen Waldron FRIBAWe are delighted to announce that our very own Stephen Waldron, has been named a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Fellow.  He is one of just 15 Fellowships awarded in the UK in 2017, and the only such awardee in Wales!

RIBA Fellowship is awarded to Chartered Members as recognition for their significant contribution to architecture, the profession and to the community.

Stephen established his practice, Stephen Waldron Architects, now based in Hirwaun, in 2011 after he returned from four years in Uganda where he led the technical side of an NGO Cherish Uganda.  He designed and set up a village-based community, working closely with the Uganda specialist AIDS hospital, for orphans who are HIV positive, enabling them to receive the medical support and personal care they required.  During this time, he developed low technology construction techniques integrating alternative systems in an extremely resource-poor environment and established an organic sustainable farm providing necessary dietary needs and training local people in improved farming.

Prior to this, Stephen was Country Director for World Relief and was responsible for providing emergency relief (shower and toilet blocks) and housing reconstruction after the 2003 earthquake in Bam, Iran which had killed over 26,000 people.

Stephen now provides full architectural services across south Wales and the south of England and is delighted that a cob-build house of his design has recently received full planning consent is to feature on Channel 4’s flagship construction show, Grand Designs.
