Chance for Childhood Project, Rwanda

The school in the mist.

The School in the MistThis year, architect Stephen Waldron was commissioned by Chance For Childhood, a UK charity funded by Comic Relief (among others), to design a new residential school for deaf children in Musanze, north Rwanda, East Africa – not far from where the famous mountain gorillas can be seen!  Stephen left south Wales to fly out for a week at the end of January to meet the end–user client, interview local consultants, and examine the site.

The project is supported by Julia Donaldson, author of The Gruffalo, and a part of the school will be named after her, probably the library.

The school will provide residential space for 140 children and teaching facilities around 60 at any one time.  This will include handicrafts, such as sewing and machine knitting, and wood carving.
